Writing for the Web
The writing for the Web course is a hands-on course that highlights the most important considerations when writing for the internet or intranet. Participants get the opportunity to work on their own website text.
Prior to the course, participants are given the opportunity to submit website text to CFC. We provide feedback on the issues addressed in the course. Participants can use the comments to enhance their own website text by redrafting the relevant parts of their text.
Main Focus
The main focus is on:
Setting the scene:
- the difference between printed text and web text;
- structuring contents for the web with a focus on the reader.
Structuring effectively with a focus on the reader:
- including important messages upfront
- using headings, sub-headings and bullet points effectively
- using graphs and images effectively
Considering calls to action, tone and branding:
- how are readers perceiving a brand online
- creating a tone and look that fits with a brand
- how word choice, content structure, and type affect the perception of a brand
Using plain language:
- what is plain language;
- what to avoid: jargon and overwriting;
- effective paragraphs;
- effective sentences.
Approach
Using samples from the daily work, this writing for the web course will help to write up good, clear text for the web. Participants will be able to distinguish between printed text and web text.
Course Duration
We usually run this as a one or two day programme.
